I was around 12 years old, retorting to my mother that I was “too busy to organize my room because she didn’t understand that I was a romantic soul who prefered to write love letters and make art than keep my space organized”. The response to my narrow perspective was this; “Romance is not a letter, it’s a lifestyle” with explanations of how a room can be romantic, created with the intention of inviting others into a safe and respectable environment that feels pleasant and considerate of others needs, how food can be cooked with affection and plated with care for the enjoyment of those who would be sharing the meal, and how one’s physical appearance and daily choices of music and fragrances can create an atmosphere of romance. It was then that I realized how much more there was to love than the fairy tales we grew up with. Love and romance should first be cultivated deeply inside our soul and then made into a lifestyle that reflects our truest self with the intention to allow others into our world. It’s about being in touch with all of our senses and fostering love in all its different manifestations wherever you can. From stoic comradery amongst business partners to healing generational family traumas; strengthening a resilient heart to be protectors of the innocent, to finding comfort and pleasure in a simple craft or hobby; stoking the flames of passion between vulnerable lovers, to the courage of parenting a young child in a changing world— love is not just romantic or just a love letter, it’s an entire way of being and the ultimate answer to everything.
